So, while I was sewing the collar on my latest project, I started to plan . . . and then it hit me. I realized that I have a strong tendency to knit a sweater, wear it once . . . maybe twice . . . and then it goes into the closet where it's forgotten.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I decided it was time to clean out the hand-knits in my closet. I reached in and pulled out the two closest piles. (Yes, I am a little embarrassed to admit that there is more. Much more.)
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I hardly ever wear this vest anymore. A favorite library patron gave me the pattern . . . and she has since passed away. I remember the day I bought the yarn. I went to Worcester with my husband and father-in-law. Since my sister lives in Worcester, I hung out with her while my husband and father-in-law went to a Holy Cross football game. She took me to the nicest shop in Tatnick Square where I wandered around and fell in love with this linen-cotton blend. Then we went back to her house and drank wine until the game was over. It was such a nice day. I better keep the vest.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Again, another vest I hardly ever wear anymore. But this was my first feeble attempt at weaving something wearable. Pat, from the Monday Night Knitting Group, invited me to her home and gave me a little weaving lesson. She was so patient with me . . . and I thought it was so generous of her to give up her morning for me. I think there may have been coffee and muffins involved. I better keep this vest too.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Then I came upon this scarf. My husband took me to the Stitches convention when it was in Hartford a few years ago. It came as a kit. The hand dyed half gets woven through the knitted half. I did wear it a lot for a while . . . not so much now. It could probably go . . . at least the knitted part . . . I never wear it together any more. It was such a nice weekend away though . . .we went out to dinner . . . I think I'll keep the scarf.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Another weekend my husband and I went to a West Point football game. On the way out we stopped in Northampton. We walked all around the town . . . had coffee at a little sidewalk cafe . . . and of course went into WEBS. While I was shopping I picked up the yarn for this top.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Should I keep going? I guess that's why my closet is filled with sweaters that I hardly ever wear. Maybe they aren't really sweaters. Maybe they are just physical reminders of past good times. Memories that are interwoven with cotton and linen, wool and mohair, and the sweet passage of time.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Until next time, keep your nose in a book or your fingers in fiber.
You find yourself working with a ball of yarn that won't stay wound. Maybe it was a cake that was loosely wound . . . maybe it's a blend with silk making it slippery . . . maybe it's lace weight . . . maybe . . . well, it doesn't really matter why. All that really matters is you are knitting and giving the yarn a gentle tug . . . it's coming unwound . . . and it's starting to make you cranky because you would rather knit than untangle the mess that is starting to get a life of it's own.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Yes, there are pretty 'yarn bowls' handcrafted by independent potters. There are gorgeous ones that have been handcrafted out of rosewood. There are funky ones and there are silly ones and I'm sure Pinterest will have you making one out of something that is in your trash at home. But that's just it. They are at home. And there you are, not at home.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Or there Lindsey was. In her car with some time to relax and get a few rows in. In her car with a skein that was starting to drive her crazy. Did she get cranky, like I would have? No . . . she took off her scarf . . . put the yarn inside . . . loosely tied the ends together and fed the yarn out from the top.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I mean, really. Is that not genius? Necessity really is the mother of invention.
(If you don't believe me, check out my post from October 18, 2013!)
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Since my mother is a sock-knitting-machine, I seem to have a never ending supply of socks . . . so of course I stopped knitting them. I moved on to mittens and finger-less gloves. It seems when I finish a pair . . . some fit great, some fit so-so, and some just did not fit. I would check my gauge and check the yarn weight and in the end I would just give away the ones that didn't fit.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">My problem is solved with Knit Mitts by Kate Atherley! This book does for mittens what the Vogue Knitting Ultimate Sock Book does for socks. Directions on how . . . and where . . . to measure your hand for the perfect fit. Knitting for a gift . . . or for a hand you can't measure? No problem . . . the author did a hand-size survey and gives some averages.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Kate Atherley provides directions for stretchy cast-ons, different thumb types, felting, linings . . . and strategies for warmth! There are patterns for just a plain basic mitten, two-color mittens, thrummed mittens, cabled mittens - you name it and she has a pattern in there for you!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It's a great book to check out of your library . . . but if you are going to knit a few pairs of mittens . . . buy it. It's a must-have for your personal library.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Frequently the biggest question of the day in my house is the popular 'What's for dinner?' The other night . . . since it was just my son and I . . . it was easy. The left-over pastrami. After we finished, there it was . . . more left-over pastrami. Then came the dilemma. It was too much to throw away . . . but not really enough for another sandwich. What to do . . . what to do. I of course put it in the refrigerator and I hope my husband will eat it someday for part of his lunch.

This to me is Pastrami!
I will probably never use it.
It will sit in my stash until
I go on a huge cleaning binge.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Why am I talking about pastrami on a knitting blog? Well . . . at the last knitting night somehow the conversation turned to throwing yarn away. Some were aghast . . . (yes, aghast . . . indrawn breath, raised eyebrows, and a dropped chin) . . . that anyone would even think about throwing yarn away. "It could be a stripe", "You could seam with it", "Patch with it". There were suggestions and reasons to keep the smallest ball of yarn.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Keep in mind I'm talking 'throwing out'. I'm not talking about 'giving yarn away'.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Hmm . . . I don't know. I like to think I'm frugal. I
have a friend that never eats left-overs. Dinner is over . . . whatever wasn't eaten is thrown out. I just couldn't do that. Too often I've had another whole
meal from left-overs. But left-over left-overs? That
pastrami in my fridge . . . I'm not going to eat it.
I'll leave it for a couple days and then if it's not
gone . . . I'll make it be gone.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

This I could never throw
out. It's a pair of mittens
just waiting to be created.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I treat yarn the same way. If I finish a project and have a skein or two left over . . . well that could be a pair of fingerless gloves . . . a hat . . . a cowl . . . or yes, a stripe in a sweater. But once the second project is done . . . and I am left with a small amount . . . I confess, I toss it. No pastrami in my stash.

How about you? Do you ever throw out yarn?

I fell in love with them. Beautiful cables and an inserted thumb hole . . . (not the lazy way that I do mine of just leaving part of the seam open!).
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">But then I got 'the story'. Her mom passed away at the beginning of the year. No one could quite bring themselves to wear any of her sweaters. So Lynn selected one . . . took it apart . . . and then unraveled it. I know, huh! Talk about tedious and time consuming.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">If that wasn't time consuming enough . . . She then took the yarn and she's knitting fingerless gloves for her sisters for Christmas.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It's probably the most thoughtful gift they will ever receive.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The Grinch . . . and Lynn . . . nailed it.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">"Maybe Christmas doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas he thought, means a little bit more."
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">While she was going through the purchase process, her boss kept saying . . . "What's your mother going to do?", "She's going to miss you!","What's your mother going to do with your room?"
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Really? Hasn't he seen the Staples commercial where the son goes off to college, and as soon as the car leaves the driveway the mother is up in his room with a tape measure?! Since my daughter has bought a house . . . well, there will be no return on winter and summer breaks.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Just picture it. An empty room . . . okay, there is one twin bed in the corner . . . but these four walls will never have the title of guest room. I pulled all my yarn out from its hiding place under my eaves . . . grabbed the baskets my mother has made . . . and set about creating . . . finally . . . my craft room. Just saying it brings me instant serenity.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">organize it?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">First, I quickly realized that Mona could not be involved in this process and she had to be evicted from the room.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I thought I would do it by fiber. All the mohair together . . . all the cotton . . . all the wool . . . you get the picture.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">But as I was making the piles I soon realized this was not going to work. All the colors mixed up just did nothing for me.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Hmm . . . by weight? But what would I do with some of those unlabeled skeins that I'm not sure what they are??
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So I grouped them together by color and the serenity quickly returned. (Please note that this is only a partial viewing of the fiber involved in this project!!)
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Next I put each color group into a basket. I put all the fleece waiting to be knitted into mittens in another basket . . . added my knitting needle collection that I keep in my grandmother's old ice tea pitcher . . . and then added a felted bear to watch over the whole corner.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">There you have it. After 29 years, all signs of a daughter are removed and replaced with a long waisted for craft room.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Although . . . if I sit there quietly . . . I can still see her sitting on the floor playing the Sims on her computer . . . there are still some spots on the walls from her glow-in-the-dark stars that I couldn't get out . . . I have memory flashes of wrestling matches and arguments with her brother . . . Elmo and blankie, Fisher Price toys, and band
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">uniforms . . . and I might even hear U2. Oh ya . . . and the Pokemon cards are there. Perhaps I'll keep the cards . . . move them in with my stash . . . keep 29 years of memories safely cushioned and preserved by wool, mohair, and cedar chips . . . and love.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Until next time, keep your nose in a book or your fingers in fiber.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

There I sat this morning.

The window was cracked to let in a little October breeze . . . I had a cup of coffee in my hand . . . Mona was in my lap . . . I was knitting away and slowly waking up and thinking of the day ahead of me.

And then it happened.

As the yarn was coming up into my hand I felt . . . well, I felt 'that'. You know . . . that moment when you no longer feel the smooth piece of yarn and two options instantly pop into your head. Is it just a 'crink' in the yarn . . . or is it a knot?

I stopped and looked . . . and of course . . . a knot. I hate that. If we can put a man on the moon, why can't they make a skein of yarn without a break in it?

It makes me a little cranky. It completely disrupted my flow. I had to undo a few stitches . . . get out my scissors . . . and do a join.

I know . . . I know . . . First World Problems . . . and I will still have a good day.

But really . . . don't you hate that too?

Until next time, keep your nose in a book or your fingers in fiber.
I always go into stash busting with such high hopes. “This is it,” I say to myself, “I am going to cull this giant pile and make something fun!” What follows is hours of Ravelry searches for patterns using the same weight and yardage of whatever I have kicking around. In this case it’s a supposed DK weight (seems more like a worsted to me) dark green tweed. I search and I search and I charge my phone and then search some more until “Eureka! The perfect pattern for the weight and yardage! … But the color doesn’t work for this pattern.” Now, a sensible person, committed to stash busting would move on but no. Now I’m in love with the new pattern and start shopping for DK weight yarn in a suitable color and my stash just stays the same size only with new colors. On the plus side I think that DK that I already own will make some pretty cozy boot socks so at least I have something working for me.
Until next time, read something weird and try not to let your stash get too out of control. Best of luck with that.

I have nothing to add to their moans and groans . . . and I know how fortunate I am that I don't.

I work in a building full of books. I was also encouraged to start a knitting group and now once a month I can sit with a group of some of the nicest and most supportive knitters you could ever meet. I have wonderful supervisors and I work with people I consider friends.

Could it get any better? Well, yes! When some of the people you work with are knitters too! There is always yarn to swap, patterns to show, stores to recommend, and help when you are stuck.

Stay tuned. My co-worker-knitting-friends will soon be joining on my blog.
I asked
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">her . . . perhaps with a little sarcasm in my voice . . . what the heck she was knitting. Her response was "washcloths and dish cloths". My response back was something along the lines of "Really? Isn't that kind of a waste of time?"
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This particular co-worker was a little more open-minded and tolerant than I am. So when Christmas rolled around, I received a gift of 2 hand-knit washcloths and 2
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">hand-knit dish cloths. I of course tried them . . . and yes, I loved them.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

When our Monday Night Knitting Group
met . . . and I saw what Lizzie was making . . . well, I had to chuckle. You guessed it. Washcloths.

With Christmas somehow creeping up, I thought what a good gift idea. A nice
hand-knit washcloth and add a scented bar of soap. Or a nice hand-knit dish cloth and add a cute jar of liquid soap for the kitchen counter.

We had a group discussion and it seemed that the yarn of choice for this type of project was Sugar 'N Cream. Whatever you choose,don't use mercerized cotton. The fiber has been treated and it just won't work as well.
Knit something up in your favorite stitch pattern . . .give it a wash & dry . . . and you have a unique hostess gift.

I think I'm off to pick up a color or two.

Until next time, keep your nose in a book or your fingers in fiber.Duxbury Free Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17232948707987141833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3228451190745877022.post-65723488028952869782017-07-13T11:12:00.000-07:002017-07-13T11:12:25.370-07:00From the Library Shelves<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">As I mentioned last time . . . the best thing about the early morning is coffee on the deck while the birds and I wake up.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So when I saw the book Field Guide to Knitted Birds . . . well it simply called my name. I mean really. Look at it. If you've seen other books by Arne & Carlos (think Easter Knits and Christmas Balls) you'll see how they cutely and cleverly designed the cover birds to look like themselves!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Inside you'll find pretty much the same basic bird pattern . . . but lots of tweaks to it . . . you can knit it to look like everything from a goldfinch to a peacock.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Take a look through it. It's a great way to use up little bits of stash yarn. It's a great way to practice 2-color knitting without the commitment of a huge project.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> It's a great way to bring the birds into your house . . . without wings flapping!
But I will admit that I love summer mornings. I get up, drag myself down the stairs, fix a cup of coffee (that my husband is smart enough to have all brewed), grab my knitting bag and out to the deck I go. I'll sit and knit, wake up, and watch and listen to the birds as they start their day too.
This morning when I grabbed my bag, I thought 'Hey, this is kind of heavy.' I mean, I'm working on a pair of mittens. How heavy can that kind of a project be?
I needed to concentrate to do the kitchener stitch, and I was watching Blue Bloods . . . so instead I started the cuff of the other mitten.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Here's all the yarn labels that I just shove into the pocket of my bag . . . and yes the wrapper for a peanut butter egg . . . I was going to throw them out . . . later.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I started to see a recurring theme . . . I bet you picked up on it too. My husband sometimes tells me . . . "You leave things laying around and say you are going to put them away later. You never do."
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Well I emptied my knitting bag. Tonight . . . not later . . . I will weave in some ends and even do some blocking. Tomorrow I will have a light bag when I go out to join the birds.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

I decided to forgive her since she has still been knitting. She was nice enough to send a picture of latest project . . . so then I decided to really forgive her!

Susan added a cute pair of booties and some other little toys.
I think it's the cutest thing.
Everything from scarves and baby sweaters to mittens and cat condos were on our needles. There were new projects and old projects. We reminisced and realized we've been meeting for just about 4 years! We decided we weren't racing and all we had to do was Knit Daily.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It's a good mantra . . . don't you think?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Linda asked for a group photo for her 'knitting bingo' card. I bet you are thinking . . . "What is knitting bingo?" We all were! One of her yarn stores provides a bingo card for the summer. The squares on the card have tasks
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">like . . . turn a cable, knit in public, knit lace, etc.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">One square was 'attend a social knit'.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So here we are!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">What a great idea, huh? You take a picture for proof and perhaps win a prize!!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Maybe one square says 'buy some yarn' . . . or . . . 'don't do any housework, knit instead'. I could really think up some good ones!!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Until next time, keep your nose in a book or your fingers in fiber.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
Duxbury Free Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17232948707987141833noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3228451190745877022.post-68643845224039084742017-06-14T14:27:00.001-07:002017-06-21T14:19:02.720-07:00From the Library Shelves<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I was just lamenting the other day that I like to do 2 color knitting . . . but I don't wear that style sweater anymore. (Lamenting sounds so much better than whining . . . doesn't it?) So when I saw the book Pretty Knitted Hands waiting to be shelved . . . I thought . . . . hmm . . . what a perfect solution.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Mittens!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">What a perfect way to use up some of my stash and also keep my 2 color knitting techniques in my head . . . and plus I would wear them. Better yet, they would be a great gift.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">My favorite is Rita. . . which ironically, is not a 2 color pattern!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">But Martha is also cute . . . and practical. There's a fold-over flap that turns it into a mitten. I think that's the place to start.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">T<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">ake a look through the book. There's really some cute hand warmers. Some are even meant to be worn in the summer.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I bet there's a pair in there for you.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I've been spending a lot of my 'knitting time' doing gardening/yard work lately. So instead of thinking about cables and short rows . . . I'm spreading mulch and staking my lilies<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Which led to my frustration one day. Am I doing something wrong . . . or is this stake just poorly designed? Who has a lily that is tall enough to go in the hoop right away?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So I voiced my frustration to my husband . . . who told me to just use some string and tie the lily to the stake until it's tall enough.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Oh, okay. He gave me some white twine and I thought 'ick'. That will look terrible in my newly mulched garden.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I brushed the dirt off me . . . ran up to my stash . . . and came back out with a nice ball of cotton yarn. (Covington, by Plymouth Yarns. Left over from the cutest Nora Gaughan vest.)

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Look. Doesn't that look better?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I tied all my lily stalks to the stakes and sat back and admired my handiwork. I thought 'What a clever little camouflage use of that green cotton.'
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Then I thought . . . 'Oh, maybe I just made extra work for myself. Maybe I'm suppose to just shove the stakes deeper into the ground and pull them out as the plant grows.'
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I guess this makes me more of a knitter than a gardener.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It's going to rain tomorrow. That's probably a good thing . . . it will keep me out of the garden. I think I'll stay in and knit and think of more stash buster ideas.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Until next time, keep your nose in a book or your fingers in fiber.
I'm not sure where the time goes. I think perhaps sometimes it really does just fly away. It hit me a couple of days ago that it was May 1st.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Four months into the 'New Year'. You know, the 'New Year' that I was going to post on Ravelry more. The 'New Year' that I was going to use up my stash yarn. The 'New year' I was going to blog more.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Maybe I can merge my knitting resolutions in with my spring cleaning. Instead of trying to use up some stash yarn . . . maybe I can just clean it out and give it to a new home! Maybe if I write Ravelry on my 'to-do' list it will actually get updated. Maybe it's never too late.
Check out this yarn. I LOVE it. Marguerite bought it at an alpaca farm. Even better than getting this yarn with great texture . . . she got to get close and personal with the alpacas . . . and saw baby alpacas!!!
I think I've got to go visit them.
It's a plain stockinette pattern with some decreases and increases that make it form fitting on your arm. The fun came when I went to work on the thumb. I've never done this method.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">You simply knit to wear you want to insert the thumb hole. Then grab some waste yarn.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Using the waste yarn, knit the stitches that will be the thumb opening. Easy enough so far . . . right??
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Next slide the 'waste yarn stitches' back to the left hand needle . . . knit the stitches with your regular yarn.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Looks like this. Just cut your waste yarn and leave a tail.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Do all this without your cat around . . . or she will want to play with all your loose ends . . . and then you may find yourself at wits end.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I kept knitting and finished my glove. It looks like this.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Time to make a thumb hole.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">All you have to do is remove the waste yarn and put the live stitches on your needles. Using cotton for waste yarn makes it a lot easier to undo. (Sometimes using wool makes all the little fibers want to stick together . . . have like a wool party or something.)

Here's what you have when you are all done. All I have to do is pick up a couple of stitches on each side to close in the hole and . . . . voila . . .
a fuss-stress-free thumb hole.
Schools are closed and the library is closed . . . in anticipation of 14" of snow.

My husband has assured me we are all set. There is plenty of propane for our generator. He has treated our driveway with a sand and salt mixture and the cones are at the bottom of our hill so no one will attempt to come up. The markers are in place so he knows where to snow blow.

He has shovels right outside the back door so we can shovel a path to the shed . . . which he has left unlocked so the locks won't freeze . . . and he can quickly get at the snow blower to remove all that white stuff.

We have bread and milk.

We are ready.

I guess he thought that I was not thinking ahead and also planning for a blizzard. Well I proved him wrong.

I have my book to finish . . . and if I do finish it . . . I have the second in the series waiting for me on my Kindle. (It does take some of the suspense out of the ending . . .
I mean if Mitch Rapp is another book, then I think he's going to get out of Beirut alive.)

I have a mitten to finish and a fingerless glove to finish.

What more could you need for a day that you are going to be stuck in the house?!

Oh wait . . . I've got that too.

Something sweet and something chocolate. (I also know there is a bottle of wine downstairs).

I believe emergency preparedness can have more than one meaning. On this my husband and I seem to have different opinions.

Tomato . . . tomato . . .
My favorite holiday. There is something about starting the year fresh . . . having a clean slate . . . setting goals and making resolutions.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I always make the 'expected' ones. You know, eat more fruits and vegetables and less bread . . . exercise more . . . be a little nicer to people . . . keep the house a little cleaner. All the things we should be doing anyways, but it seems easier to commit at the beginning of of the year.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Then there are my knitting resolutions. I'll post my completed projects on Ravelry. I'll try and use up more stash yarn. I'll practice intarsia more because . . . well . . . because quite honestly I'm not that good at it. (I may even stink at it). I'll knit more for charity and I'll blog more.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Wait . . . I'll blog more? What's today's date?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Math was never my strongest subject, but I think that means I've waited 2 1/2 weeks to blog. I've also finished the sweater I made with the recycled yarn. (Don't bother to go to my Ravelry page . . . it's not posted yet. Neither is my Counterpane Masterpiece that I also finished. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I could also write a message to my husband in the dust on my hutch.)
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Perhaps I need a little more effort in actually performing my resolutions. Perhaps I need more time in the day. Perhaps I need to set priorities.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Perhaps I am off to Market Basket . . . there does not seem to be any fruit in my fruit bowl. Perhaps goals and resolutions do not have to be made just on New Years. Maybe you can decide on January 18th to knit a pair of mittens from your stash yarn and then give them to a local shelter. Maybe you can decide on a random Wednesday morning to be a little nicer to the human race . . . or at least hold the door open for someone who has their arms full. (Sometimes it's good to start small!)
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Maybe John Trusler was right. "No time like the present, a thousand unforeseen circumstances may interrupt you at a future time."
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Until next time, keep your nose in a book or your fingers in fiber.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Joy was in the holiday spirit . . . and not just in name!! She is making tree ornaments . . . literally! Look at these cute things. By the end of the night she had little balls sewn onto it.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Speaking of ornaments, Peggy
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">gifted us each with a
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">'sweater' . . . complete with a little clothes hangar.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Peggy is also on the cutting edge. Yesterday I was browsing (also known as wasting about an hour) through Pinterest and noticed a lot of Pins of 'pony tail' hats. Some had the opening at the top (also known as a 'bun' hat), and some had the hole in the back. Peggy of course already had one knitted up!!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Lizzy brought . . . okay, did you notice that it doesn't involve yarn? They were delicious! As she started to explain the recipe, she told us it was in the Barefoot in Paris cookbook. Of course I ran up to our non-fiction section and grabbed it!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">They are called Elephant Ears, or Palmiers. I like Palmiers much better than Elephant Ears.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Linda brought in her finished 'Football Season' scarf . . . with a matching Patriot's hat. What lucky grandkids!!

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Linda is also working on her Christmas Gifts. Check out what she is working on. She was worried about her gauge . . . but I told her if it came out too big . . . well, just get a bigger wine glass to put in it!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

I was two steps short of being incredulous. Really? Undo the seams and rip it out?! I of course responded - "I would never do that. If I'm sick of it, I'll give it away. If it doesn't fit anymore . . . I'll give it away. I would never go to all the work of undoing the seams and then ripping it out. Never."

Fast forward about a week and half. Another knitting friend has a hand-knit skirt and sweater set . . . she never wears it anymore. Do I want it? (See, she is giving it away . . . she is not going to rip it out.)

I took it home . . . tried it on . . . and the skirt miraculously fit. The sweater fit . . . but sadly was knit in another era (think of the 80's), and it is a cropped style. How sad. But wait . . . the skirt would look nice with a matching vest. Something asymmetrical or even the currently popular 'rectangle with armholes' pattern.

Hmm . . . If I rip out the sweater . . . I can use the yarn. It really is nice yarn . . . SensuWool by Berroco . . . a combination of wool and nylon that makes a garment really hold it's shape . . . which is why it was a great choice to knit a skirt from. It's discontinued so I can't buy anymore. But if I carefully undo the seams . . .

The moral of the story . . .
A basic A-line skirt will never go out of style.
Always use good yarn . . . it really could last forever.
Never say Never. (And if you do, make sure you confess to Martha when you see her. I know I will.)

Until next time, keep your nose in a book or your fingers in fiber.
When I thanked this generous knitter she mentioned she had more at home in a partially knit sweater that she was never going to finish . . . did I want that too? "YES!" She suggested ripping it out, washing it, and then reknitting with it. I confess to you that in all my years of knitting I have never tried this. It just seemed like . . . well, work . . . but with the extra yardage . . . well I would also have enough to make a sweater.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">She brought it in . . . I took it home . . . and ripped it out. (I did feel bad ripping out all her work . . . all that seed stitch!).
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I started to make hanks by winding the
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">yarn around my hand and the length of my arm . . . but that didn't work. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">My hand ended up curling in . . . and I ended up with these stubby little hanks!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Next I tried to wind it around my dining room chair . . . but it kept slipping off . . . and my newly adopted kitty from the shelter thought we were playing a game. (Isn't she the cutest?!)
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So I consigned myself to my mudroom where I could shut the door on Mona the Cat . . .
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">and lo and behold there was a bench with the perfect arms to wind yarn on!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I loosely tied one end to the bench and then started
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">winding . . . loosely of course . . . I didn't want to stretch this gorgeous yarn!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">When I finished winding I took a contrasting color and tied my hanks together at both ends . . . and then slipped it off.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I ripped out the rest of the sweater and did the same for the other lengths. I ended up with 4 extra hanks of this gorgeous-I-can't-wait-to-use-it-what-should-I-knit-with-it yarn.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I filled my kitchen sink with lukewarm water . . . added a little Euclan . . . and submerged my hanks. I let it soak for about 20 minutes to fully absorb the water.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It was really like magic . . . I could see the kinks coming out!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I carefully took it out and gently squeezed out the water . . . and then hung it to dry.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
